Initiatives

The TSA undertakes numerous initiatives over the course of the year to raise awareness about architectural design and urban issues in Toronto. The TSA also considers itself to be an enabler, supporting or helping individuals or groups to develop their own ideas and initiatives.

In the past, ideas generated by TSA members or executive have grown into much larger annual events that are organized and managed by the City, including the Festival of Architecture and Design (fAd) and Doors Open Toronto.

In recent years, the TSA has introduced new forms of communication and discussion for our members and the public, including our monthly urban affairs forums, printed newsletters, regular e-bulletins, and a new and updated website. The TSA has published and is working on several publications focusing on architecture in Toronto – the TSA Guide Map (Toronto Architecture 1953 – 2003), an Open Spaces guide map and a guide book to contemporary architecture. Ongoing initiatives include the annual poster competition and design matters t-shirts, the Modern Heritage Building Initiative, CANstruction, Unbuilt Toronto exhibition, and the annual TSA Film Series during fAd.

The TSA also supports many different organizations, lecture series, galleries and events: Doors Open Toronto, Toronto Urban Design Awards, Heritage Toronto Awards, Toronto the Good Party, and Harbourfront Centre Architecture gallery, Convenience Gallery and Urbanscape Gallery. The TSA holds seminars and workshops for intern architects preparing for their NCARB examinations. Publications that have been supported in the past include Concrete Toronto, John Lyle book, and the University of Toronto Graduate AL&D Thesis Publication. In addition, the TSA funds annual scholarships for University of Toronto AL&D and Ryerson University students.
