Walkable Cities
The 2010 Poster Competition is the fifth annual poster competition hosted by the Toronto Society of Architects. The 2010 competition invited submissions for a design that draws attention to the value of pedestrian oriented design in cities and illustrates how a culture of walking can enhance economic, social, and ecological sustainability.
Urban sprawl has made many of us increasingly dependent on automobiles for everyday travel. As a result, many people do not identify themselves as pedestrians. Fostering a robust culture of walking will make daily life in the city healthier, richer, and more enjoyable. Creating spaces for sustainable and active modes of transportation is essential, through the design of streets, public spaces, and environments that promote walking, cycling, and transit. The focus of this competition is “how to foster a public realm which promotes walking and thus leads to a more sustainable city environment.”
Over 60 submissions were received. Finalists were chosen by a jury representing the Toronto Society of Architects, City of Toronto Walking Strategy and the design profession. Finalists were selected on the basis of originality and creativity in describing, representing or suggesting the theme; design excellence; and design adaptability in whole or part for other media applications or formats.
Recognizing that walkability hinges on generating public awareness, the posters created through this competition will be used for this purpose, by the Toronto Society of Architects, and by other similar organizations, through exhibits, promotions, and printed materials.
Congratulations to all of the winners!
